"I wish Christians in Israel and all over the world a very merry Christmas. Christmas is a special opportunity to spend time with loved ones and to celebrate this most festive of holidays. And as you gather with your families and your friends to celebrate this Christmas and as you enjoy the blessings of the New Year, I am sure you will remember those who are less fortunate because Christian communities across the Middle East are experiencing a particularly difficult time. They experience violence, persecution and fear. This has become the daily staple of Christian communities throughout the Middle East. Not so in here in Israel, the one exception. Because here in Israel, religious freedom is a sacred principle. Israel's Christian citizens enjoy the full blessings of freedom and democracy, their equal rights enshrined in Israeli law.So on this most important day in the Christian calendar, let us remember the common heritage and values that unite us in the face of extremism and hatred, which we will never accept.

From Jerusalem, the eternal capital of the Jewish people, the city of peace, I join Christians everywhere, and especially those in the Middle East, in a common prayer for a more peaceful and tolerant world. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!"

Branding Palestine

"Wir Palästinenser haben die Klischees einfach satt!". Sagt Qais Assali. Zusammen mit einer Gruppe junger deutscher, französischer und palästinensischer Journalisten will der Graphikdesigner das Klischee-Bild von Palästina, wie es in vielen europäischen Köpfen vorherrscht, aktiv ändern. Gleichzeitig sollen Palästinenser selber einen neuen Zugang zur ihrem Land und ihrer Kultur und Tradition erhalten. Das Projekt heisst "www.paltrips.ps", kommt in frischem Design und multimedial daher und ist ein Kind des Französisch-Deutschen Kulturzentrums in Ramallah.

Tulkarem, Qalqilia, Jenin, Nablus, Jericho, Ramallah, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Hebron und Gaza heissen die zehn Städte, die in Bild, Ton, Schrift und bewegtem Bild vorgestellt werden. Kein herkömmlicher Reiseführer will die neue Webseite sein, eher ein intimer Blick in die (junge) palästinensische Realität. Palästina sei zwar für viele junge und junggebliebene Europäer heute interessant, aber die Menschen kämen mit zahlreichen Klischees und einer Menge Unwissen, meinen die Macher der Seite. "Palästina ist mehr als Beduinen und Wüste, wir wollen die verborgene Schönheit Palästinas zeigen", sagt der palästinensische Journalist und Miterschaffer der neuen Seite, Omar Zeyadeh. Der Konflikt soll dabei nicht aussen vor bleiben, aber es gehe um die "richtige Mischung von Schönheit und Realität".

Nachhilfebedarf herrscht ihrer Ansicht nach aber auch auf palästinensischer Seite. Weil man von der gegenwärtigen Situation so "angewidert" ist, fokussiere man auf Europa – und vergesse das eigene Erbe, formuliert es Teammitglied Jamal Saad. Die "Untergrundgeschichten Palästinas" sind damit auch "eine Botschaft an uns".

"Urbanität", "Nachtleben", "Innovation" heissen die Schlagworte, das "Tagebuch eines Nachmittags in Gaza", "Skating in Qalqilia", "Shawarma Drum'n Bass in Jerusalem" und ähnliches mehr sind die Themen für das neue Bild jenseits der Klischees. "Die Realität Palästinas", glauben die Initianten, "ist das beste Mittel gegen die Klischees".

"Now I know that some in Europe say that they are frustrated with the situation in the Middle East. Well let me tell you a secret. We in Israel are frustrated with the situation in the Middle East. (…) The simple truth is that half of Palestinian society has been taken over by Islamist extremists who openly call for Israel's destruction, while the other half refuses to confront the first half. So when Europeans say that they are frustrated, we say, 'Join the club'. (...) It was said then that Hamas uses terror to destroy the peace, and it is said now that Hamas uses terror because there is no peace. Well, the truth is that Hamas uses terrorism against Israel because it's a terrorist organization committed to Israel's destruction. It's as simple as that."
